Julius' Bar in New York City has cemented its place in the Big Apple's history. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to designate the long-running gay bar as an individual landmark, reported ABC news. Located on 10th Street in the West Village neighborhood, the bar has been in business since the 1860s and "played an important role in the fight for civil rights for the LGBTQ community," according to ABC. "In 1966, we had something called the sip-in," Julius' Bar manager Nick Gabriellini told ABC. "Where the state liquor authority didn't allow homosexuals to be served alcohol if they were openly gay. So, they staged the sip-in here, and there was a lawsuit." Before the Stonewall uprising, the sip-in and lawsuit was a big step for LGBTQ+ equality. "The 'Sip-In' at Julius' was a pivotal moment in our city and our nation's LGBTQ+ history, and this designation today marks not only that moment but also Julius' half-century as a home for New York City's LGBTQ+ community," said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. "Honoring a location where New Yorkers were once denied service solely on account of their sexuality reinforces something that should already be clear: LGBTQ+ New Yorkers are welcome anywhere in our city. Let this designation serve as an important reminder to everyone that LGBTQ+ history is New York City history and that, like Julius', the City of New York will always serve as a safe haven for LGBTQ+ people to be safe and feel safe." Anthony Rapp and fiancรฉ Ken Ithiphol are now proud parents of their first baby. As reported by People, the pair welcomed baby boy Rai Larson Ithiphol via surrogate on Friday, and promptly announced the news to their Instagram followers on Monday. "Ken and I are thrilled to share that our family has grown!" the "Star Trek: Discovery" actor captioned a post. He added, "Our son, Rai Larson Ithiphol, was brought into the world on Friday, December 2, 2022, by an incredibly generous surrogate, to whom we are eternally grateful." According to Rapp, Rai is pronounced like "rye" or "chai" and they "love him very much." Amid a flood of comments congratulating the Rapp and Ithiphol on their new addition was Rapp's "Star Trek" colleague Ethan Peck (who stars as Spock in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds") and "Rent" cast member Daphne Rubin-Vega, saying: "HALLELUJAH !! Welcome home, Rai!" Rapp reportedly first met Ithiphol in 2016 after the yoga in instructor slid into the actor's DMs after seeing him in a performance. Though Nisos Mediterranean intentionally avoids being called a Greek restaurant, the menu bulges with dishes from that country, from tiropita and taramasalata to moussaka and rizogalo. Chicago has seen a surge of ambitious new Greek restaurants, but none has food that looks like Nisosโ.โ โ Take the tzatziki, which is as thick and creamy as hummus, thanks to the use of Chef Avgeria Stapakiโs imported yogurt of choice. โThe yogurt I want is very thick and rich,โ Stapaki said. โThatโs why it has this structure and body.โ Instead of raw garlic, she uses fermented black garlic along with fermented cucumber juice. The result is luxuriously smooth, making for a fantastic start to the meal.โ โ Like nearly everything at Nisos, the moussaka is gorgeous, expensive and perplexing. Stapaki takes the homey layered dish and transforms it into a visually stunning showstopper. When the server brings it out, a fog of dry ice wafts from the edges.
