"Deep in Vogue," Amy Watson and Dennis Keighron-Foster's documentary about the ballroom scene in Manchester, England, offers viewers a peek into the state of the art as it's practiced in contemporary times and in another country. Bursting with color, dance, music, and talents — including the emcee of the annual Manchester Ball, film director and producer Rikki Beadle-Blair ("Fit," "Kickoff"), trans makeup artist Grace Oni Smith, and various Manchester ballroom house mothers (Darren Pritchard, Darren Suarez, and Oni Smith among them), "Deep in Vogue" gives its audience a basic grounding in ballroom and vogue's American roots that ties directly into Manchester's scene. And not just Manchester's; the ballroom scene is present in many cities on Northern England, places defined by the working class. The film explores this paradoxical reality, and touches on issues of identity, belonging, and — most deeply — LGBTQ culture. EDGE had a chance to catch up to Watson and Keighron-Foster to hear more about the film and what went into making it. The Hungarian government, under Prime Minister Viktor Orban, has passed a constitutional amendment that simultaneously heightens the government's power and denies familial recognition and adoption rights to same-sex couples, The New York Times reports. The measure was passed mere weeks after a prominent government official and Orban ally, Jozsef Szajer, stepped down from the European Parliament after being caught last month attending a "gay orgy," the Times notes. The new legislation also follows other anti-LGTBQ laws adopted in that nation recently. "Earlier this year, the government adopted legislation tying an individual's gender to the person's sex and chromosomes at birth — the first law of its kind in Europe and a clear attack on transgender rights," the Times recalled. Marvel has confirmed that Chris Pratt's "Guardians of the Galaxy" character, Star Lord — also known as Peter Quill — is bisexual. The comic book character was introduced in 1976, but was never top-tier for Marvel until 2014 when the first of the Pratt-starring "Guardians of the Galaxy" films debuted in theaters. That film grossed over $770 million, while its 2017 sequel earned more than $860 million. The third installment is slated for 2023. Before then, Star Lord is set to appear in "Thor: Love and Thunder," set for theatrical release in May 2022. Marvel Studios had been criticized for lack of LGBTQ visibility in its films, and hasn't yet commented on whether the revelation of Star Lord's bisexuality will factor into future film appearances. Also a compelling question is whether Pratt would play the character's bisexuality, given that the star is open about attending the problematically anti-LGBTQ Hillsong Church. Out basketball star Derrick Gordon took to Twitter on Dec. 10 to allege that a player for the opposing team hurled an anti-LGBTQ slur at him during that afternoon's game. "Great team win today," Gordon tweeted after his Cypriot League team, Apollon Limassol B.C., prevailed over ETHA Engomis, "but being called Faggot during the game by one of the other players on the team is a disgrace and shouldn't be allowed in pro sports."Gordon added: "I will always stand up for my community no matter what," and appended a Pride flag emoji to his tweet. The queer author of a highly anticipated debut story collection has died. Anthony Veasna So was 28. His death was announced this week by his publisher, Ecco, which did not immediately provide additional details. A native of Stockton, California, who had settled in San Francisco, So once described himself as a "queer boy, a Khmer-American son of former refugees, a failed computer scientist, a grotesque parody of the model minority, and a graduate of Stanford University." In "Afterparties," to be published in August, he drew upon the tragedies his family endured in Cambodia during the rule of the Khmer Rouge and his own struggles with sexual and cultural identity. #RIP Tap link in bio to continue on @EDGEmedianetwork ?️?❤️ ?: Anthony Veasna So / Instagram
The much-talked about new video game "Cyberpunk 2077" was released on Thursday and players were quick to use the game's genital modification feature...and have same-sex sex. The video game news website Kotaku writes: "After introducing the basics, the rating mentions how characters can be customized with 'various sizes and combinations of genitals,' and that there are sex scenes in first person: 'Players can select a gender and customize their character; customization can include depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals. Players can encounter events where they have the option to engage in sexual activities with other main characters or prostitutes — these brief sex scenes (from a first-person perspective) depict partially nude characters moaning suggestively while moving through various positions.'
