Last summer EDGE reported that the 24-year old was the break-out star of the first season of the Netflix reality show "Too Hot to Handle," where he was one of the winners of the $100,000 prize. It's hard to see the forest through the trees. For many pandemic-stricken singles, body grooming has taken a back seat over the past year as daily showers and teeth-brushing are the most people can manage. A new survey by LawnStarter revealed some interesting facts about who prefers to manicure their lawn. Surprisingly, more men than women have continued grooming, with 51% of women and 59% of men describing their pandemic body hair as either a "managed forest" or a "well-manicured garden." You're twice as likely to trim if you're engaged or married versus singles. What areas are most popular? Sixty-nine percent of women continue to shave their armpits, while 78% of men concentrate on their faces. How about waxing? More choose to do so in the summer, with 20% of men enduring the slather and rip of a waxing treatment. More than 31% of women are willing to deal with the sting to look smooth. Does age make a difference? According to the survey, yes, with Gen Z and millennials (18- to 29-year-olds) grooming twice as much as other age groups since the pandemic. And our favorite random fact? Variety has reported that "Watchmen" Director Nicole Kassell will helm a remake of "The Wizard of Oz" for New Line Cinema. This month Rizzoli publishes his book of photos from those firefighter calendars - "On Fire: The Firefighters of France" "The idea was really to honor their profession... To do something quite sensual while respecting them a lot, without going too far," reports the French website TÊTU reports. He sees his work with the firefighters as a way of thanking them. Asked what he saw in the faces of his models, he replied: "I felt strength, pride. They all displayed a resolute and conquering air which impressed me a lot. And which reminded me a lot of that of the Firemen. I have just finished the 6th calendar of the Firefighters and I am still as impressed by their determination. They too have worked a lot during this period of crisis. They are, along with the medical staff and the police, the heroes of our time." He added: "The fact that they are military, that they play sports every day, it gives them a kind of attitude that is very recognizable and that binds them all, he says. Out Boulder County has completed what may be the nation's first survey of COVID-19 vaccine reluctance among LGBTQ people. The survey offers a look into the attitudes of a community that has often gone unseen in public health efforts because information about sexual orientation and gender identity is rarely collected in federal, state or local health data. For example, there are no questions about sexual orientation or gender identity on the U.S. Census. The Department of Health and Human Services rarely collects this information in its public health surveys or other data gathering. "If LGBTQ people are not identified in data collection, we cannot be seen by public health agencies, hospital systems and other health care organizations," said Mardi Moore, executive director of Out Boulder County, which provides advocacy, services, programs and support to Boulder County's LGBTQ communities. "If they don't see us, we don't exist, and getting resources allocated to us is nearly impossible. Sexual orientation and gender identity have to be part of the data that health organizations collect," she added. When it comes to COVID-19 vaccine reluctance, this information is crucial to an effective community vaccination program, which requires participation by people of every demographic. Like members of many marginalized groups, LGBTQ people may have a greater distrust of health care systems or the government — both of which can contribute to a reluctance to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The survey by Out Boulder County is the first to look at attitudes among LGBTQ people. It's a reminder that LGBTQ identity has the potential to be nearly as important as race/ethnicity or political affiliation in determining whether a person is willing to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Not many bands can say that their classic 1980s hits are still played on the radio. Nor has any other all-female band since The Go-Go's topped the long-held crown of having a debut album go to number one when they wrote their own songs and played all of the music. From the opening scene of a rabid crowd begging for more at a 1981 concert, to its 2020 reunion of band members in the studio recording "Club Zero" (their first single in 19 years), "The Go-Go's" is a love letter about five women who ruled the charts, and the world, and are still around to talk about it. The legacy and talent of these five uber-talented ladies is really what "The-Go-Go's" documentary boils down to. Charlotte Caffey, Belinda Carlisle, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine, and Jane Wiedlin weren't thrown together haphazardly by a record company Svengali. They worked their asses off to gain a number one debut album with "Beauty and the Beat," and followed it up with other hit albums and singles. "The Go-Go's" isn't the sort of gossipy documentary seen on VH-1's "Behind the Music." Directed by Alison Elwood — who earned rave reviews for her documentary about The Eagles — "The Go-Go's" breaks the band down to its core. Out singer John Duff has found a way of coping with pandemic isolation by making music about it. In his recently released video "Do It," the 31-year old hunk presents a day in his home life, from waking up in bed in sexy skivvies to cleaning in stilettos, playing video games on an old school color television, and turning his living room into a laser-strobed club. "As a 31-year-old gay man who is starting out in music, I am aware of the stakes," he said in a press release to push the song's release. "Are people going to laugh at me? Probably ... but I don't lose anything if I do. But that said, if I give up, that's where I lose something." As for his queer side, the French website TÊTU points out that Duff offers plenty of easter eggs in the video. "The liveliest - or rascal - minds will no doubt have spotted the jockstrap the singer wears when exercising in the video. "I instantaneously felt like I wish I had done this a long time ago," country singer TJ Osborne told Ellen DeGeneres during a recent appearance on her talk show. The singer stopped by "Ellen" by way of a video chat last week, a day after TIME Magazine ran an interview in which he came out as gay. Calling the response to his coming out "wild," Osborne, 36, went on to say that the "wave of love" that greeted him made for "a very emotional day." DeGeneres sympathized, nothing that "straight people don't ever have to shove something down and then all of a sudden say to someone, 'I'm straight!' "I was asked, like, 'Why do you have to do this?' " Osborne said in response. "And in a perfect world I wish I didn't have to." The star went on to share that, "I kind of got to this point to where I knew that there was never going to be the perfect time" to come out. Now that he's accomplished that feat, Osborne said he now knows that "the perfect time is always now." As many LGBTQ people have upon coming out, Osborne described his embrace of authenticity as "a weight off of my shoulders" - an oppression replaced by the liberating sense that he's now been welcomed for who he really is. "People that I feel like personify masculinity and the straight culture" were "coming out with a lot of pride for me," Osborne told Ellen. Norway is fining gay dating app Grindr $11.7 million for failing to get consent from users before sharing their personal information with advertising companies, in breach of stringent European Union privacy rules. Norwegian's data privacy watchdog said that it notified the company of its draft decision to issue a fine for 100 million Norwegian krone, equal to 10% of its annual global revenue. The Data Protection Authority took action following a complaint by the country's Consumer Council alleging that personal data was shared unlawfully for marketing purposes. The council had detailed in a report last year how Grindr and five partner companies in the online ad industry collect personal data to use for targeted advertising in ways that the council said violated the EU's tough GDPR privacy rules. The watchdog came to the preliminary conclusion that Grindr shared user data with a number of third parties without legal basis. The data included GPS location, user profile information and even the fact that users are on Grindr, which could reveal their sexual orientation and therefore merit special protection. "The Norwegian Data Protection Authority considers that this is a serious case," said Bjorn Erik Thon, the authority's director-general. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki boiled down what "message" the Biden administration was sending with the president's signing of an executive order regarding school athletics: "Trans rights are human rights." U.K. newspaper The Independent reported on Psaki's comments, which were part of an exchange between herself and Fox News reporter Rachel Sutherland, who asked Psaki, "what message would the White House have to trans girls and cis girls who may end up competing against each other?" When Psaki asked Sutherland to clarify her questions, the Fox News reporter asked, "Is there any kind of messaging or clarification that the White House wants to give on the executive order?" "I would just say that the president's belief is that trans rights are human rights, and that's why he signed that executive order," Psaki replied. "In terms of the determinations by universities and colleges I would certainly defer to them.' A Navajo Arizona state lawmaker has become the latest openly LGBTQ member of the Biden administration. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg selected Arizona state Rep. Arlando Teller as the department's deputy assistant secretary for tribal affairs, the Arizona Republic reports. "Teller was part of the Indigenous Peoples Caucus as well as the LGBTQ Caucus and a member of the transportation committee as well as the land, agriculture and rural affairs committee," the newspaper article added. In a valedictory message, the lawmaker - who resigned his office as a state representative Feb. 8 - told his colleagues that it had been a "sincere pleasure working with all of you despite our disagreements, despite our party affiliation. "At the end of the day, we have worked for the communities that we represent." "Teller's departure leaves a vacancy in the state House of Representatives, which was narrowly divided 31-29 between Republicans and Democrats," the Arizona Republic noted. "But as Teller resided in Apache County, it will be up to the board of supervisors there to appoint someone to fill his seat." Joe Allen, whose Times Square-adjacent bistro which bears his name has been a decadeslong draw for theater folk and where a post-show drink is part of the Broadway experience, has died. He was 87. Allen died Sunday in Hampton, New Hampshire, according to Jason Woodruff, a former staffer for the Allen family of restaurants who spoke to the family. The Joe Allen restaurant had red brick walls, sturdy wood tables and chairs, a large bar and was adorned with posters from Broadway's most notorious flops. Regulars included Stephen Sondheim, Chita Rivera, John Guare and Elaine Stritch. Visitors might also see Elisabeth Moss there, sipping a vodka ginger ale. "Strong, steady, comforting and reliable," said Rivera on Twitter. "He certainly will be missed but we will carry him with us forever." Playwright Paul Rudnick noted that Allen "created a home for the theater community, where everyone hangs out, gossips and commiserates. He'll be missed, but his legacy lives on, including the wall of posters from flop shows." Allen opened Joe Allen on 326 W. 46th St., in 1965, at a time when opening a restaurant west of Eighth Avenue in Manhattan was a risky proposition, long before it became know as Restaurant Row. Allen himself was not overly gregarious like many restauranteurs, but coolly efficient and warm to friends. Many of the servers at Joe Allen were actors earning paychecks when not onstage. During Black History Month, the National AIDS Memorial honors Black lives lost to AIDS with a specially curated selection of 56 blocks of the AIDS Memorial Quilt (the Quilt). The exhibition uses the beauty and power of the Quilt to bring to light stories of the countless men, women and children who have died and the impact AIDS has had on Black Americans. "This virtual exhibition shares stories of hope, healing and remembrance to honor Black lives lost to AIDS," said John Cunningham, Executive Director of the National AIDS Memorial. "Our hope is that it helps raise greater awareness about the ongoing struggle with HIV and the impact systemic barriers have to positive health outcomes, particularly among the Black community." In the 40 years since the first cases of AIDS were reported, Black Americans and communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by AIDS. By 1993, HIV was the leading cause of death for Black men between the ages 25-44 and by 2004, HIV became the leading cause of death for Black women in the same age group. In 2018, Black Americans made up 42% of the nearly 38,000 new HIV diagnoses in the U.S., with half of those living in southern states. The Quilt is a powerful tool to reach these communities through its stories of resilience, healing, hope and remembrance represented in each panel. "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 7 contestant and "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars" champion Trixie Mattel hails from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When This Is It! — a gay bar in her home town, and, having operated for 53 years, the state's oldest -— faced hard times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mattel stepped up to help ensure the bar would weather the downturn, local newspaper the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The bar has played a central role in the city's, and the state's, LGBTQ culture, USA Today noted. But it was also, the newspaper recalled, "the first LGBTQ+ bar that Brian Firkus — who developed his Mattel drag character in Milwaukee — visited after turning 21." Mattel, speaking to the Journal Sentinel via Zoom, said that drag performers in the city "made This Is It! our happy hour moment before we had to put on the wig and go do the drag show. "My relationship is such that sometimes I will come from General Mitchell" — the city's airport — "to the bar with my bags." Added Mattel, "It really is like the Cheers in Milwaukee. I met some of my lifelong best friends there." This Is It! owner George Schneider had taken on debt to expand the venue not long before the crisis hit, the Journal Sentinel reported. The global pandemic was not about to stop filmmaker Sam Levinson without a fight — literally. The creator of HBO's "Euphoria" found his hit series shuttered so he pivoted to writing and directing "Malcolm & Marie," a film about an epic lovers' quarrel starring John David Washington and Zendaya — who also stars in the HBO show. Set in a luxury California beach house, Washington's Malcolm — an up-and-coming director — and Zendaya's Marie — an out-of-work actress — have returned after a party where his film has premiered to rapturous applause. But he forgot to thank Marie and that leads to an outpouring of simmering grievances. Levinson had been thinking about possible script ideas when he seized on this argument as a way to explore art and appreciation. He ran it past his wife, producer Ashley Levinson, a frequent collaborator whose credits include "Bombshell" and "Queen & Slim." "I remember I was like I turned to Ash and I said, 'What if it's about a filmmaker who forgets to thank his partner at a premiere?' And we just both burst into laughter because, granted, that might have been something I did at one point." While he and his wife had a calm conversation after his slight, Levinson wrote a two-hour blow out, likely Malcolm and Marie's worst fight. "Malcolm, I promise you nothing productive is going to be said tonight," Marie warns. But back and forth the lovers go, pushing and goading each other. She says he's a megalomaniac and a narcissist. He says she's needy and crazy. "Stop blaming me for your inabilities," Malcolm tells Marie. She yells: "Do you know how disturbing it is that you can compartmentalize to such a degree that you can abuse me while eating mac and cheese?" T.J. Osborne, of the country duo Brothers Osborne, has come out as gay in a new interview with Time. The 36-year-old country star explains that he's known he was gay since he was younger, and has been out to family and friends in Nashville for years. "I'm very comfortable being gay," Osborne said. "I find myself being guarded for not wanting to talk about something that I personally don't have a problem with. That feels so strange." Osborne said he wasn't ready to be out earlier in his career and, as a consequence, he neglected relationships. "There are times when I think I've marginalized this part of me so that I feel better about it," he said. "And I realize that it is a big part of who I am: The way I think, the way I act, the way I perform. God, think of all the times that we talk about love, and write about love. It's the biggest thing we ever get to feel. And I've kept the veil on." How Osborne will be received is another matter, given the traditionally conservative leaning of country as a genre — which has been juxtaposed in recent years with a growing cadre of out performers in country and related genres, such as Billy Gilman, Ty Herndon, Brandy Clark, Chely Wright, Orville Peck, and Brandi Carlile. Osborne is curious too, stating "I don't think I'm going to get run off the stage in Chicago. But in a rural town playing a county fair? I'm curious how this will go." Musical newcomer J.R. Price is starting out with some top-tier LGTBQ musical talent in his corner. With his Freddy Freeman-produced debut album "Daydream" due out on Valentine's Day, Price teases its release with two singles: The empowerment anthem "Body Positive," and a slow-burning romantic duet titled "Dance with Me," featuring out singer-songwriter Tom Goss. A non-supportive family life had a profound impact on Price at a young age. Seeking comfort in food, Price suffered from body dysmorphia, anorexia, binge eating, and suicidal depression, all culminating in a health crisis when he ended up hospitalized for hyper diabetes. Georgia's 14th district representative Marjorie Taylor Greene is making headlines again for all the wrong reasons. According to LGBTQ Nation, Greene announced her backing of H.R. 84, a piece of legislation that would prevent American embassies from flying any flag but the United States flag. H.R. 84, better known as the "Old Glory Only Act," states that "The Secretary of State shall ensure that no United States diplomatic or consular post flies any flag other than the United States flag over such post". In a further statement from her office, Greene specifically stated that she "promised to put America first," and that the legislation would "prevent Hate America flags from flying over American embassies," likely referring to Pride flags. Greene's public prejudice would not be limited to the LGBTQ community, with the statement also managing to invoke Black Live Matter as a terrorist group. "In the past, rogue members of the State Department flew the flag of the radical Marxist group," Greene said speaking of Black Lives Matter. "We should NOT be flying a flag of a group who wants to erase our history and bring mass destruction to our country through Communism." The supposed incident that Greene referenced were the American Embassies hanging of Pride and Black Lives Matter Banners in June, which the Trump administration forced the consulate to take down. Uche Maduagwu, a Nigerian actor who is part of the country's "Nollywood" film industry, came out as "proudly gay" in a pair of Jan. 31 Instagram posts. "Don't let anybody intimidate you," the actor says in his first post. "Come out! Show your identity! You are who you are, boys - you are who you are." The actor goes one to declare he is gay and proud, a message he repeated in second post he made on the same day in which he said he was "proudly gay" and asked U.S. President Joe Biden to place sanctions on his country "for its inhuman laws against law abiding homosexuals". In the post, Maduagwu said the Nigerians are "tired and scared" due to the country's anti-LGBTQ laws, "despite the fact that more than 40% of current legislatures and over twelve governors are homosexuals". Maduagwu did not offer any names of government officials in making the claim, but he followed up with several more posts over the next few days. In one, he condemned what he described as a disparity in policing; in several others he posted pictures of himself wearing a bright red brassiere. The posts received a few congratulatory messages ("Thanks for your strong message," one supporter posted, while others said the actor had made valid points), but they drew anti-LGBTQ criticisms as well. An eight-year-old girl was expelled from a Christian school in Oklahoma for telling another girl she has a crush on her, The Daily Mail reports. Delanie Shelton said Rejoice Christian School, in Owasso, called her in after daughter Chloe expressed her feelings to her crush on the playground. Delanie defended her daughter, "I said if we're being honest, I think it's okay for girls to like girls and she looked shocked and appalled." The school expelled both Chloe and her five-year-old brother, and the family must now find a new school for their children. "They ripped my kids out of the only school they've ever really known away from their teachers and friends they've had over the past four years over something my daughter probably doesn't know or fully understand," Delanie said. She also told FOX23 News, "Chloe said the vice principal sat her down and says the Bible says you can only marry a man and have children with a man. My daughter was crying saying 'Does God still love me?'" "Whatever makes people happy they should be allowed to do. She was upset and crying and asking me if 'God still loves me,' if she is 'wrong' for the way that she feels," Delanie said, adding that she's trying to instill in her children a sense of acceptance — that people can love whomever they want. A teary-eyed Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Monday recounted hiding in her office bathroom as a man repeatedly yelled "Where is she?" during the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, and also revealed a sexual assault in her past as she talked about trauma. The remembered terror of the day made Ocasio-Cortez get emotional as she spoke during an Instagram live video, and she chastised those she said wanted Americans to put the day behind them and not recognize the lingering impact of such an event. "These folks who tell us to move on, that it's not a big deal, that we should forget what's happened, or even telling us to apologize, these are the same tactics of abusers," she said. She went on to say, "I'm a survivor of sexual assault. ... When we go through trauma, trauma compounds on each other." She didn't say anything else about that experience. Ocasio-Cortez said the atmosphere around the Capitol and Washington had started to feel more tense and volatile in the days before the insurrection. On that day, she said she was in her office when she heard repeated bangs on the door, like someone was trying to get in. Her legislative director told her to hide, and she went into the bathroom. That was when she heard a man yelling and trying to find her. "I have never been quieter in my life," she said. You just can't keep a good city down, especially when Mardi Gras is coming. All around New Orleans, thousands of houses are being decorated as floats because the coronavirus outbreak canceled the elaborate parades mobbed by crowds during the Carnival season leading to Fat Tuesday. Some smaller groups announced no-parade plans before the city did. Pandemic replacements include scavenger hunts for signature trinkets that normally would be thrown from floats or handed out from a streetcar, as well as outdoor art and drive-thru or virtual parades. The prominent Krewe of Bacchus has an app where people can catch and trade virtual trinkets during Carnival and watch a virtual parade Feb. 14, when the parade had been scheduled. But the "house float" movement started almost as soon as a New Orleans spokesman announced Nov. 17 that parades were off. That morning, Megan Joy Boudreaux posted what she later called a silly Twitter joke: "We're doing this. Turn your house into a float and throw all the beads from your attic at your neighbors walking by." But the more she thought about it, the more she liked it. She started a Facebook group, the Krewe of House Floats, expecting a few friends and neighbors to join. The numbers rose. Thirty-nine subgroups evolved to discuss neighborhood plans. Two students have been arrested in Turkey on charges of inciting hatred and insulting religious values for a poster depicting Islam's most sacred site with LGBT flags. Their arrest late Saturday came after top Turkish officials slammed the poster, displayed at an exhibition in Turkey's most prestigious Bogazici University. For weeks, students and faculty have been protesting the Turkish president's appointment of a new rector who has links to his ruling party and clashes have broken out with police. Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu tweeted that "LGBT perverts" had been detained for "disrespecting the Great Kaaba." Top government officials from Turkey's conservative, Islamic-based ruling party condemned the poster. Their statements came after the university's Islamic research club slammed the poster on social media, prompting people to take to Twitter with hashtags denouncing the poster, LGBTs and the university. The country's director of religious affairs, who previously created a stir by saying homosexuality brings disease and was defended by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan when he came under criticism, said he would take legal action.
