Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Monday vetoed legislation that would have made his state the first to ban gender confirming treatments or surgery for transgender youth, though lawmakers could enact the restriction over his objections. The Republican governor rejected legislation that would have prohibited doctors from providing gender confirming hormone treatment, puberty blockers or surgery to anyone under 18 years old, or from referring them to other providers for the treatment. "If (the bill) becomes law, then we are creating new standards of legislative interference with physicians and parents as they deal with some of the most complex and sensitive matters involving young people," Hutchinson said at a news conference. The Republican Legislature could still enact the measure, since it only takes a simple majority of the House and Senate to override a governor's veto in Arkansas. Hutchinson said he believed an override was likely. Hutchinson's veto follows pleas from pediatricians, social workers and the parents of transgender youth who said the measure would harm a community already at risk for depression and suicide. Hutchinson said he met with doctors and transgender people as he considered whether to sign the measure. He said he would have signed if it had just focused on gender confirming surgery, which currently isn't performed on minors in the state. He noted it wouldn't have exempted youth who are already undergoing treatment. "The bill is over broad, extreme and does not grandfather those young people who are currently under hormone treatment," he said "In other words, the young people who are currently under a doctor's care will be without treatment when this law goes into effect." Sponsors of the measure did not say when they planned to seek an override or whether they had enough votes secured to enact the measure despite Hutchinson's objection. Kate Winslet revealed in an interview with The Sunday Times this week that she knows "at least" four actors who won't publicly come out because they're worried doing so will negatively impact their careers. The Oscar-winning actor said the actors in question are "well-known" and "fear" Hollywood's response if they came out, believing it would cost them roles, The Independent points out. "I cannot tell you the number of young actors I know — some well known, some starting out — who are terrified their sexuality will be revealed and that it will stand in the way of their being cast in straight roles," Winslet, 45, said. She went on to say one of the "well-known" actors was recently told by an American agent to keep their bisexuality a secret. "The agent said: 'I understand you are bisexual — I wouldn't publicize that.' " Winslet said. "I can think of at least four actors absolutely hiding their sexuality. It's painful. Because they fear being found out." Winslet, who stars in the queer 2020 film "Ammonite," lashed out against the "judgment, discrimination and homophobia" in Hollywood. Thanks to the French website TÊTU for locating an Instagram account that brings new life to erotic gay images from the past, specifically archival pics from the 1970s and 1980s. The account is under the name of @truckstop_guy who, TÊTU writes: "With a fairly regular frequency, the owner of this page compiles screenshots from old pornographic VHS as well as photos from retro homoerotic magazines. The general watchword is above all to honor a facet of Western gay history by carrying out colossal archiving work." TÊTU tracked down BJ, who created the page, to talk about his posts and his process. "They belong to a riskier time when identifying clearly and proudly as gay, in a sexual way moreover, was revolutionary, underlines the sixty-year-old. Not that things are perfect today, but these men took a risk and helped young people like me to accept their sexuality but also to be totally satisfied with it." But BJ does more than just post the pics. He researches each one "to be as complete as possible on the models presented, on the studios, on the context ...," TÊTU adds. "At a time when the exchange of nudes has become commonplace, BJ wants to cherish these visuals which represented a true counter-current for the 80s." The photos include a Who's-Who of adult male performers from the time, including JD Slater, Al Parker, Bruno, Paul Gerrior, Mike Morris, Jack Wrangler, Bull Dozier amongst the hundreds of annotated posts from studios such as Colt, Falcon, Target, and Brentwood, plus such magazines as Mandate, Honcho, Playguy and Drummer. Dressed as construction workers, cops, and fireman with big hair, mustaches and plenty of body hair, these pics are definitely from the time before the Internet. Social media influencer and reality star Jazz Jennings shared a social media post about the "devastating" impact of banning transgender girls, like herself, from participating in sports. Jennings wrote, "when I was 8 years old, I was banned from playing girls soccer for over two years. The ban made me feel excluded, had no merit and negatively affected me and my family." She continued: "Me and my family were devastated, but after 2+ years trans inclusive policy was created. "People argue that transgender women have competitive advantages. This is not true. My personal experiences and many statistics prove this. "Today in 30+ states, including Florida, they are trying to ban transgender people in sports. These bills are discriminatory, increase exclusion, and have no merit." Jennings' post comes on the heels of South Dakota governor Kristi Noem ordering a ban on transgender girls playing on girls' sports teams. Elsewhere in the U.S., governors in Tennessee and Arkansas, as well as the House in West Virginia, have passed laws banning transgender girls from playing on girls' sports teams. Jennings' tweet also includes a clip from "I Am Jazz" in which her father, fighting back tears, reading an email he wrote to an official at the time his 8-year-old daughter was banned from playing on a travel soccer team when she was younger. In a new interview with NME, "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" lead writer Malcom Spellman simply responded to the increasingly popular fan query, "I'm not diving down rabbit holes, but just keep watching." The character of Bucky Barnes — a World War II soldier presumed to have been killed but re-emerges as an assassin in the present day — is played by handsome Romanian actor Sebastian Stan, who played openly gay T.J. Hammond, son of Sigourney Weaver's Elaine Barrish, in the miniseries "Political Animals." Barnes must adjust to life in the 21st century without his best friend Steve Rogers. Stan said to MTV earlier this year, "Steve Rogers and Bucky are both orphans and kind of like brothers. They kind of grow up together and look after each other. It's a very human, relatable thing... I also wanted to look out for how their relationship changes once Steve Rogers becomes Captain America. There's always a competition and they're always one-upping each other. "RuPaul's Drag Race" found its Season 13 villain on Friday night (if only for one episode) in the person of Utica Queen, the Minnesota-based drag queen who idiosyncratic personality defied being categorized up to last week's episode. The lanky queen, whose wide smile and broad style brought to mind a hippie version of Carol Burnett, had stayed afloat in the competition thanks to his shrewd fashion sense and by simply defying being categorized. But what did him in on this week's episode was his seeming just mean in this week's challenge, a "Nice Girls Roast" that included contestants Nina West, Valentina and Heidi N Closet. By their nature roasts push the boundaries of taste, but Utica took it to a new level as she ignored the suggestions by judges Michelle Visage and Loni Love to bring down the meanness with his roast jokes. Instead Utica ratcheted them up, resulting in one of the most uncomfortable sequences on the show this season. After being sent home, she seemed oblivious to criticism, but tweeted an apology after the episode aired on Friday for her size-shaming jokes. "I want to apologize for my performance in this ep of DR. Especially to @ LoniLove, @ michellevisage, and @ NinaWest, the jokes were in bad taste and my attempt at roast humor was for the lack of better words, horrible.
