Transgender kids would be banned from playing on school sports teams for the gender with which they identify under a GOP-backed bill that advanced Thursday in Montana, one of more than a dozen states where lawmakers are proposing restrictions on athletics or gender-confirming health care for trans minors this year. The proposals run counter to an executive order signed by Democratic President Joe Biden during his first day in office prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity in school sports and elsewhere. The order immediately sparked a backlash from conservative groups, a split that reflects the deep divisions in the U.S. around transgender youth. Proponents of the Montana bill say allowing transgender athletes to compete can create an unfair playing field in middle and high schools, especially in girls' sports. Opponents say it would hurt transgender kids and could drive business away from the state and make it harder for Montana companies to attract new employees. "Transgender students, like all students, deserve the chance to learn teamwork and to build self-esteem and a sense of belonging with their peers through sports," said Sam Brinton, vice president of advocacy and government affairs for The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ advocacy group. Haaz Sleiman, one of the cast in the upcoming Marvel film "Eternals," shared his take on the upcoming movie's introduction of a married gay superhero and the first same-sex kiss to grace the screen in the long-running movie franchise. Sleiman plays the non-super-powered husband of Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), Screen Rant reports. "What Marvel has been able to accomplish, I'm so proud of them because they approached it in a very thoughtful way, and Phastos is one of the biggest superheroes in the film," the Screen Rant story quoted Sleiman as saying. "I'm his husband, an architect; we have a child." Sleiman went on to express a wish for even greater representation, saying he "wished I was the superhero, because when will we see an Arab Muslim openly gay actor playing a superhero?" Sleiman described a kiss the will reportedly appear onscreen between the married male characters, calling it "beautiful" and "very moving," and saying that "Everyone cried on set" when the moment was filmed, IndieWire reported. Out actor Luke Evans will play another bad dude in a Disney movie as he's set to play The Coachman in the company's live-action remake of "Pinocchio," Deadline reports. The new movie, directed by Robert Zemeckis ("Forrest Gump," "Castaway") and co-written by Zemeckis and Chris Weitz, also stars Tom Hanks, who will play Geppetto, and will go to direct to Disney+ and not play in theaters. Evans previously played the villain Gaston in Disney's remake of "Beauty and the Beast" in 2017. That film sparked controversy when it was revealed that Gaston's sidekick LeFu (Josh Gad) has a crush on Gaston but kisses another male character; a moment that at one point Evans played down. Last summer, the "Ma" star talked about reprising his Gaston role for a "Beauty and the Beast" prequel series for Disney+. At the time he said he and Gad had heard new music composed by Alan Menken specifically for the series. Offering no details about Menken's new music, nonetheless, Evans said "we are so excited about this," adding that he and Gad have already "read through two or three episodes now." Declaring "God is on your side," a Roman Catholic cardinal, an archbishop and six other U.S. bishops issued a statement Monday expressing support for LGBT youth and denouncing the bullying often directed at them. "All people of goodwill should help, support and defend LGBT youth," said the statement released by the Tyler Clementi Foundation, named for the Rutgers University student who took his own life in 2010 after being recorded on a webcam kissing another man. Among those signing the statement were Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the archbishop of Newark, New Jersey, and Archbishop John Wester of Santa Fe, New Mexico. According to Catholic teaching, gays and lesbians should be respected, loved and not discriminated against, but homosexual activity is considered "intrinsically disordered." The church leadership in the U.S. vigorously opposes same-sex marriage and has not supported efforts to boost acceptance of transgender people. The bishops' statement said LGBT youth attempt suicide at much higher rates, are often homeless because of families who reject them and "are the target of violent acts at alarming rates." With air travel fraught with restrictions and danger, Pam Ann (Australian performer, producer and DJ Caroline Reid) has been pretty much grounded for nearly a year. That doesn't mean that the cheeky performer, who has built quite a cult following in the past decade, isn't working while in quarantine. On January 2 she brings "Pamdemic," her latest multi-character show, to Wilton Manors in Fort Lauderdale, FL in a socially-distanced performance. With her big hair and classic air hostess attire, Pam Ann looks like she walked out of some 1960s Russ Meyer film. It's a look, she says, she got from her mom. "I blame my mum because she was a drag queen in the 60s. I get drag queens, trans, trans man, I've had it all my life," she told the Australian site QNews in 2018. "I grew up very alternative," she continued. "I was hanging out with trans, gays, drag queens. I was very alternative back in my early years. It was part of the fabric of my life. So it's my DNA. If you're going to have a language, I speak trans and gay. It's just my world. It's just what I exist in and what I know really." The newly-installed governor of Puerto Rico has declared a state of emergency due to intense anti-trans and misogynistic violence, CNN reports. The epidemic of lethal violence targeting trans and cisgender women has been ongoing for years, but has worsened in the wake of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria in 2017 and, more recently, the toll the COVID-19 pandemic has taken, CNN noted. 2020 was an especially deadly year. "At least 60 direct and indirect femicides were reported in Puerto Rico" last year, CNN noted. The number included the murders of six trans women. Calls for the government to put together a meaningful response have also been ongoing for years. The new governor, Pedro Pierluisi, "announced an executive order aimed at preventing and protecting against gender-based violence through a number of programs," CNN reported. The governor's office released a statement on Jan. 24 announcing the state of emergency, which it said would last until June 30, 2022, ABC News reported. "For too long vulnerable victims have suffered the consequences of systematic machismo, inequity, discrimination, lack of education, lack of guidance and above all lack of action," Gov. Pierluisi said in the statement. Pierluisi called for gender "equity" and "an educational approach to teach our boys and girls that every human being has to be respected," ABC News reported. In the Swedish town of BorĂ„s a tradition has grown over the past five years of building a large snow sculpture in a roundabout after a snowstorm. The latest has gone viral. A three-meter-high (or nearly 10-feet tall) snow penis appeared there after a heavy snowfall last week, causing both giggles and safety concerns, reported The Local, the English language website from Sweden. In a story called "Giant penis in snow stands by highway 40." the Swedish newspaper Göteborgs-Posten, Helena Alçenius, the CEO of a marketing company that promotes the town commented: "I am a little impressed, because it is not something that you build in the blink of an eye and it must be site-built. A young lesbian woman in Cochrane, Canada, faced rejection at a local Dairy Queen when her family's request for a birthday cake message was denied by the establishment's supervisor, Global News reports. Summer Gibbons and her sister had requested a cake reading "Happy Birthday Lesbian" for Gibbons' 22nd birthday celebration. After initially being told that was okay by a female employee, Gibbons' sister Gracie was told by a supervisor that "it was family establishment and they can't put that on a cake for other families to see," Gibbons related. When Gibbons' family took the issue to the establishment's owner, "He said it's policy because it was sexual in nature to put on a cake," Gibbons recalled. Gibbons had known in seventh grade she was lesbian, she told Global News, but it wasn't until just two years ago that she came out. Since then she's found love and acceptance - until now. Gibbons spoke of "Having that feeling of not be welcomed for being who I am and that not being okay," and said, "I only came out to my grandparents a year ago and I struggled with it. "It's about being comfortable with who you are and this makes me not comfortable because of fear of judgement and rejection." In a new interview, Land O'Lakes President and CEO Beth Ford discusses her experience as the first out lesbian to helm a Fortune 500 company. Ford was recently awarded the Yahoo Finance/INvolve OUTstanding Top 100 Role Model LGBT+ Executives 2020. Nominated by peers and colleagues, all executives on the list identify as LGBT+. Land O'Lakes is an agricultural, member-owned cooperative with a specific focus on dairy products. According to Land O'Lakes' latest financial release, the company reports a "net sales of $2.9 billion and net earnings of $66 million for the third quarter ending September 30, 2020" with a year-to-date net sales of $10.3 billion and $184 million net earnings. Ford says that it is an honor to be named the top recipient of the 2020 prize, stressing the importance of "being a role model" and that such lists illustrate "the important work done to empower the LGBTQ+ community this year. These lists are indicative of the progress made, and of the progress possible." Ultimately, being a role model includes, as Ford believes, "bringing your authentic self to work, and enabling others to do so." Citing the importance of diversity and inclusion, Ford explains that Land O'Lakes prioritizes the recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce as well as advocates "for our members and the communities in which they live and work." Ultimately, Ford seeks to make both employees and the company's customers feel "valued for exactly who they are." It shouldn't surprise anyone that the cranky Christian group One Million Moms is not fond of the Cadbury Creme Egg ad campaign featuring two men sharing one of the seasonal treats. EDGE reported recently that the ad features a "gay couple holding hands, spinning in a circle on a rooftop. One has the egg between his lips while the other leans in to take a bite. The narrator says, "sharers? Yeah, we are down with that!" Within days the haters took aim at the ad, which led one of its actors Callum Sterling (who shared the egg with Dale Moran) to push back, dismissing critics with, "does anyone see how ridiculous this is? Like actual LOL." Adding to the absurdity is the solemn screed from One Million Moms in a press release from its director, Monica Cole: "If you look forward to having your annual Cadbury Creme Egg each Easter season, you might not like how the company celebrates the risen Savior. Cadbury just released a commercial that has resulted in a backlash of comments from Christians and non-Christians alike. Everything from 'disgusting' and 'very disappointing' to 'yech' and 'gross'." She goes on by describing the gay moment as being similar to a scene from Disney's "The Lady and a Tramp," "where the two dogs share spaghetti. Milan's fall/winter 2021 menswear shows have gone digital this week, catapulting creative directors like Prada's Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons into filmmakers as much as designers. The designers took comfort to an entirely new level, reimagining onesies in luxe fabrics, deconstructing suiting elements, and embracing both textural elements and button details in outerwear. Discovering Prada's triangle logo became a game of "Where's Waldo?" with the signature branding appearing on buttons, gloves and clothing accents. "The moment of a creative renaissance is very far," said Prada, as reported by Business of Fashion. "We have a very important sense of responsibility for the moment." "It's not right to be exuberant," Simons added. "The bodysuit represents the body, but other pieces are minimalized. We wanted a calmness in shape." The 11-minute fashion show features music by one of Simons' favorite techno musicians, Plastikman, aka Ritchie Hawtin.
