Growing up in the conservative '90s in Virginia, Mraz faced a culture where LGBTQ+ identities were mocked, making him fear becoming a punchline. As he shared with Jesse Tyler Ferguson on the "Dinner's On Me" podcast, Mraz's upbringing instilled a sense of caution and secrecy in him, despite his deep desire to see the world and express his true self. Throughout his teens and twenties, Mraz kept his head down, navigating the world with the conservative mindset of his hometown, which made breaking free and embracing his identity a challenging feat. Even as he found success and traveled widely, the fear of judgment from family and friends held him back. ? Despite two marriages to women, including an eight-year union that ended in 2023, Mraz's path to self-discovery was always unfolding. It wasn't until 2018 that he publicly embraced his queer identity, a pivotal moment that allowed him to start living authentically and fully. Since then, Mraz has been open about his journey, sharing his experiences and the joy of self-acceptance with his fans and the world.
