You'd be forgiven for thinking this stunningly magnificent castle was somewhere in the depths of Europe, but in fact, it is just 11km past the village of Greenthorpe. and surrounded by wheat and sheep country lies regional NSW's very own castle.

Known as Iandra Castle, the original homestead dates back to 1880, with a two-storey reinforced concrete structure added in 1908. "When people come here they're taken by the size of the place out in the middle of the countryside," says caretaker Bev Kershaw.

Though they hailed Sydney, Amanda Callan and Andrew Morris always felt the call of the country. "I called him 'the bushranger of Bondi'," Amanda recalls.

So, when Amanda spotted a little Catholic church with a 'For Sale' sign in the small town of Billinudgel, everything fell into place. Now, the couple lives here with their son Banjo and dog Maggie, handcrafting soaps enriched with natural clay, real plant extracts, and essential oils – much of which comes from the property itself.

Stepping into Little Kickerbell, an 1870s stone cottage in Liverpool Plains, is like stepping back in time. “There’s a timelessness to this place,” says former owner Cathy Armstrong.

The garden that surrounds 120-year-old Rockgedgiel homestead at Bundella is nothing short of magic. The beating heart of a 4800-hectare cattle and cropping property, this gorgeous home and garden has been in the same family since 1927.

Meg and Colin, who moved in 10 years ago, have managed to double the size of the garden since, working with shrub roses, arbours, poppies, daisies and irises (to name just a few) – and have been rewarded by an increase in the insect and bird population.

Blame it on the quiet call of the countryside, the idea of a life lived simply, or the desire for sustainability, but there is an appeal to making a tree change that has long enamoured Australians.

But what's it really like when city folk live out their rural dreams and respond to the call of the wild? From hobby farms to mud-brick solar-powered homes, six of our readers have shared their stories.

After finding the remains of an old homestead on their property, the owners of this farmhouse near Yass in the NSW Southern Tablelands
were inspired to build something that would combine the old parts with something new.

"It must have been a big house in the old days, but there are no plans for it so we don't know exactly," says owner Fiona. "I'm guessing a lot of it was timber rather than stone, because so much had gone."

Country Style’s August issue is out tomorrow! And it’s all about our beautiful island state, Tasmania.

On our cover, English springer spaniel Nicky waits patiently on the threshold of the historic sandstone homestead @twamleyfarm, on the East Coast of Tasmania. Once the home of 19th-century artist and writer Louisa Anne Meredith, the 1842 building has housed the Turvey family for six generations. Country Style columnist @maggiemackellar_ visited her friends and neighbours to explore their home and write our cover story.

When TV journalist Stephanie Trethewey married a farmer and moved to Tasmania, she made a dramatic career change, launching @motherlandaustralia to help rural mums connect with each other. We find out what makes this powerhouse tick.

Visit wild and wonderful King Island with us. Set in the Bass Strait, it’s a spectacular spot famous for its dairy, its crayfish – and its friendly locals.

The entries poured in from all corners of Australia, and now we’re announcing the finalists in our Legends of the Land Awards, honouring the unsung heroes who keep rural communities going. Plus, we meet Robert Gordon, founder of beloved ceramics company @robertgordonpottery. Robert himself is handmaking the prizes for our lucky winners, who will be announced in our September issue.
