Before Lucie Sayer moved into an old miner's cottage in Daylesford, VIC she had suffered a series of major heartaches. But before long, the spa town's restorative magic began to work.

"Victorians used to come up here to take the waters. It still has that feeling, but it's also buzzy, with a vibrant community and a good energy," she says.

This 1890s manse is richly layered with stories and legacies of its past residents.

After thirteen years living in the house and raising their kids, current owners Lucie and Duncan Stanford decided it needed an update.

They enlisted the help of interior designer Adelaide Bragg to create an eclectic, lived-in look. "There's a warm beige-caramel palette throughout the house, and it's got that layered look," she says.

When Jayne and Darren Stewardson purchased this 1970s log house in 2015, it was cramped and had a confusing layout and an awkward side entry.

Luckily, the home's entire structure was supported by the exterior walls, allowing the pair to completely re-jig the floorplan.

They compromised space in the bedrooms to prioritise the creation of a spacious, open-plan living room and kitchen.

All aboard – a steam train in rural Victoria makes for a unique holiday experience @dufflebird_getaways A first-class carriage has been carefully restored, machinery and all, and then given an elegant makeover that harks back to the bygone age of steam.

This sprawling Adelaide garden began in 2012 when owner Brenton Roberts, a national sales manager, decided to dabble in garden design.

Many of the plants in the garden (including that lush green lawn, if you can believe it) were grown from cuttings and painstakingly planted by Brenton and his family.

Espaliered pear trees initially intended for the driveway now wrap around the stone cottage’s exterior, while an edible fig hedge adds softness and encourages guess to wander around the garden.

Coastal style takes many forms, but the latest iteration places emphasis on a strong flow between indoor and outdoor zones, layers of natural textures and a subdued palette of neutral colours. The window seat at The Bails, Byron Bay is a standout example.

While it may seem easy to recreate, style extraordinaire Melissa Penfold says there are 7 mistakes Aussies make when channeling this look in their own homes.

Once the manse of a church, this century-old weatherboard cottage, known as The Art House, is both a boutique hotel and an art gallery.

While guests here can experience art hung inside a home, that's not where the beauty ends. A sensitive restoration means the home itself has retained many original features including wooden floors, pretty fretwork detailing and a tiled front verandah.

Built in the 1860s during Rydal's prosperous past as the terminus of the western railway line, this cottage was in a state of disrepair by the time owner Rosie Wynter stumbled upon it.

After making the decision to leave the city and go bush, Nicholas Scott set to work creating a hardy garden that would be able to withstand the harsh, central Victorian climate.

Despite the garden's eventual success, a period of trial-and-error initially ensued, "[I] just hadn't realised just how freezing cold the winters are out here; I was trying to fight nature," he says.

It wasn't until a light-bulb moment that Nicholas' plan for the garden finally fell into place. Tap the link in our profile to take a tour.
