American-born Filipino TV host, columnist, entrepreneur and actor Mond Gutierrez has come out as gay in the August 2021 cover story for Mega Entertainment magazine. In his IG post, he wrote: "I was never not out. I never denied who I was. I just never shared my story publicly until now. Growing up, it took a while for me to face my true identity, and figuring it out wasn't easy. I went through a long period of time hating myself because society taught me that being different wasn't the right path, especially for someone growing up in the public eye. I went through a dark phase of self destruction - creating unhealthy habits to have some sort of escape so I didn't have to face my reality. I kept things to myself because I was scared to bring shame to my family, and didn't know how others would treat me. I'm thankful to those close to me - my friends and family for giving me the confidence to embrace myself fully without judgment. I consider myself lucky because some people don't have a support system they can run to. Which is exactly why I'm sharing my story now. Because if there's one thing I learned this past year and a half is that life is fleeting. Caeleb Dressel finished off his gold rush at the Tokyo Olympics with two more dazzling swims. The guy who dreads all the attention won't be able to escape it now. He's one of the greatest Olympians ever. "I'm really glad to be done," said the tattooed, 24-year-old Floridian, who captured his fourth and fifth gold medals of the Tokyo Games on Sunday. Dressel was perfect in the events he had a chance in, capping off his stunning week in the final race at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre by putting the Americans ahead to stay in the 4x100 medley relay on their way to a world record. He doesn't plan to savor his triumph for long — which is right on par for a guy who said a day earlier "the sport was a lot more fun when no one knew my name." They certainly know it now. "I give myself a pat on the back and then I just want to go home, put it away and move forward," Dressel said. In his first race Sunday, he cruised to a relatively easy victory in the 50 freestyle. By the time Dressel was done, he had entered an elite club of swimmers who won at least five gold medals at one games. Michael Phelps did it three times, of course, highlighted by his record eight golds at the 2008 Beijing Games. There's also Mark Spitz (seven golds in 1972), East German Kristin Otto (six golds in 1988) and Matt Biondi (five golds, also in '88). Make room for Dressel, who made it look so easy. It wasn't. Could Kazakhstan bodybuilder Yuri Tolochko (them/they) be reaching a new stage in their relationships? Tolochko made international headlines when they married a human-sized doll, named Margo, in November, 2020, in a ceremony they published on social media. EDGE reported at the time that the "hunky, bearded Yuri wore a black dinner-suit and bow tie, and the Melania-like Margo wore a long white lacy wedding gown. A few dozen guests watched as Yuri glided Margo around the dance floor in the traditional 'first dance'." It looked like a storybook wedding, save one thing: "the bride was a synthetic sex doll, that Yuri actually proposed to in December 2019," reported the Euro Weekly News website. The marriage went sour, though, after Margo broke and they had to send her to be repaired right before Christmas. Four months later, they divorced Margo. "We broke up with Margo. I'm not ready to talk about the reasons for the divorce yet," they told the Daily Star. Since then, they introduced "a chicken sex toy and an Asian sex doll called Luna," wrote the Daily Star. But this week they may be moving away from inanimate sex objects, posting on Instagram: "My harem and I have a new experience. I decided to try ourselves as a rental family." The man's face is not seen in the video, which starts with Yuri and the mystery man combing Luna's hair before they turn their attention on each other. "Luna has a headache all day today. It had all the hallmarks of a sensationalist tabloid sting. On July 21, 2021, an article appeared to allege that a senior U.S. priest, Monsignor Jeffrey Burrill, had used the hook-up app Grindr, with data from the app placing him at a number of gay bars. Burrill, the now-former general secretary of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, promptly resigned. But the report was not published by an outlet that many Americans would associate with such sex "exposés." Indeed, most would have never have heard of it at all. It was The Pillar, a small newsletter founded in early 2021, that makes up just a tiny part of the Catholic media landscape in the U.S. As a scholar of American Catholicism and culture, I take a keen interest in Catholic media. My recent book, "Follow Your Conscience: The Catholic Church and the Spirit of the Sixties," draws upon dozens of articles in the Catholic media as primary sources for historical analysis. While many Americans may be familiar with evangelical outlets like Christianity Today or the Christian Post — not to mention the hundreds of evangelical radio stations across the nation — the Catholic media seems to have less prominence on the national stage. But as The Pillar's reporting on Burrill shows, Catholic journalism can nonetheless be influential — and can split opinion in just the same way as media with a wider audience. Creating a rainbow oasis of diversity and inclusion in a hostile environment — sometimes violently so — is what LGBTQ bars have always been about. In past decades such an establishment would often operate on the fringes of the law, with police raids and being outed in the media a constant threat. Yet, they were also spaces of connection, community, and, especially in the '80s with the advent of AIDS, political activism. But where are LGBTQ people who want to drink less — or not drink at all — supposed to go? It's a question that concerns more and more people as they seek sober avenues that empower and fulfill, especially if they are in recovery. The answer: Queer-owned cafes, tea houses, creative community spaces both online and in the real world — even high-end chocolate shops. Such sober queer spaces do exist; they are gaining ground (even despite the COVID-19 pandemic), and they're bringing new visibility with them. It's a trend that's been gathering momentum for a few years. In 2020, NBC News reported on how alcohol-alternative LGBTQ spots were popping up across the nation in unexpected locales — from the online Sis Got Tea in Louisville, Kentucky, to the brick-and-mortar Queer Chocolatier in Muncie, Indiana. The tattered myth that gays are generally better off than their heterosexual peers took another hit with a new study that reconfirms gay and bisexual men earn less than straight men do. Lesbians, on the other hand, earn more overall than heterosexual women. The new paper, published today in the quarterly Journal of Population Economics, is the work of researchers from Anglia Ruskin University and was authored by university professor Nick Drydakis. It is a meta-study that surveys two dozen earlier papers to arrive at its conclusions. "The papers cover the period between 1991 and 2018, and countries in Europe, North America, and Australia," the study's abstract states. In addition to its main findings of a pay disparity, the study's abstract took note that "in data sets after 2010, gay men and bisexual men and women continue to experience earnings penalties, while lesbian women continue to experience earnings premiums" despite anti-discrimination efforts. The continuing disparity "represents a cause for concern and indicates the need for comprehensive legislation and workplace guidelines" to address the gaps, the abstract added. British actor Jack Whitehall told Variety he was "proud" of portraying the first openly gay major character in a Disney movie. The "Good Omens" star said he didn't realize when auditioning that his character would be gay, much less come out to Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson, who plays a steamboat captain. Speaking to the magazine's Marc Malkin before the film's premiere, Whitehall recalled that "there was only a like a couple of sides" available to him for the audition. The actor recorded himself reading the lines, with his mother taking the part of Johnson's character. "So yeah, there wasn't any indication of that," Whitehall said of the character being LGBTQ and coming out in the film. The moment itself sidesteps the word "gay," but Whitehall's character, McGregor, makes himself perfectly clear, and Johnson's steamboat captain, nicknamed "Skipper," takes his revelation in stride. McGregor — the brother of another major character in the film, Lily, played by Emily Blunt — explains to the skipper that "he broke off three engagements with women because his 'interests happily lay elsewhere,' " Variety recounts. "He goes on to say that he would do anything for his sister," the Variety piece continues, "because she was the only one who 'stood by' him while he was shunned by family and friends because of who he 'loved.' A private, after-hours Drag Queen Story Hour that was scheduled to take place at a museum in Lincoln, Nebraska, was canceled following a deluge of threats — some of them on the lives of the organizers, reports local news source the Lincoln Journal Star. The event, which was scheduled to run for two hours on July 31 and had a guest list of 50 attendees, "was private and to be held after the museum closed," the article noted. Even so, "the nasty messages started to roll in," the article said, citing organizer Waylon Werner-Bassen, "followed by threatening ones — even death threats — which prompted the Lincoln Children's Museum and Drag Queen Story Hour Nebraska to cancel the event after discussing safety concerns with the Lincoln Police Department." The hatred didn't just target the event; the museum itself, as well as LGBTQ equality advocacy group OutNebraska, which is associated with Nebraska's chapter of Drag Queen Story Hour, also received "received an overwhelming number of threats of violence," including death threats, the museum explained in an Instagram post, according to local news channel KLKN. The museum's executive director, Tara Knuth, told the Journal Star, "We work to foster environments within our physical space in which all families feel they can participate fully," Knuth said. "There is no one more American than a Miami Cuban, and there is no one more Cuban than a Miami Cuban," says Rodrigo, who I meet at the rum bar in Little Havana's Cubaocho museum and performing arts center while waiting for my late friends (a very Miami trait!). "You'll never find a people more patriotic to two homelands." The Miami Cuban community is not monolithic. We are Republicans, Democrats, Catholics, and Santeros. We are the conservative, mostly-white business owners who fled Cuba in the early '60s, and the queer Afro-Cuban artists who were among the 125,000 Cuban immigrants who arrived during the 1980 Mariel boatlift. And we are everything in between and beyond. But if there's one thing that has become crystal clear as thousands march in Miami in solidarity with Cuban protestors, it's that Rodrigo was right: "You'll never find a people more patriotic to two homelands." Nowhere do these co-existing allegiances converge more than in today's Little Havana, the Miami neighborhood where Cubans started settling after the 1959 Cuban Revolution. Little Havana is a funky mix of cultures. It is a place where old-world traditions blend with progressive thinking — where machismo and queerness cohabitate. Rising anger over the policies of Hungary's right-wing government filled the streets of the country's capital on Saturday as thousands of LGBT supporters marched in the annual Budapest Pride parade. March organizers expected record crowds at the event, and called on participants to express their opposition to recent steps by populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government that critics say stigmatize sexual minorities in the Central European country. Budapest Pride spokesperson Jojo Majercsik said this year's march is not just a celebration and remembrance of the historical struggles of the LGBT movement but a protest against Orban's current policies targeting gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer people. "A lot of LGBTQ people are afraid and don't feel like they have a place or a future in this country anymore," Majercsik told The Associated Press. The march came after a controversial law passed by Hungary's parliament in June prohibited the display of content to minors that depicts homosexuality or gender change. The measures were attached to a bill allowing tougher penalties for pedophiles. Hungary's government says its policies seek to protect children. But critics of the legislation compare it to Russia's gay propaganda law of 2013, and say it conflates homosexuality with pedophilia as part of a campaign ploy to mobilize conservative voters ahead of elections next spring. When Jack Harlow didn't turn up in the shower scene in Lil Nas X's "Industry Baby" video that dropped on Friday, One fan tweeted, "kinda was wishin to see jack n ya gettin nasty together but it was fine liked it super gay as always u're doin great sweetie." A clothed Harlow appears in the video dancing with a female dancer and helping Lil Nas X break out of Montero State Prison, but his non-appearance in the shower scene wasn't his choice. "He surprised many when he responded to online comments by saying he'd gladly have doffed his boxers and popped into the shower with Nas and the boys," reports Variety. "Nas wrote the whole treatment for this video and I followed his lead every step of the way. If he had asked me to be in that shower scene I woulda been in that shower scene," he wrote. This time, the weather gods were smiling on Kerby Jean-Raymond and his label, Pyer Moss. So too were the fashion gods. Two days after torrential rains and lightning sent guests fleeing for cover and forced Jean-Raymond to postpone unveiling his hotly awaited first couture collection, the sun came out Saturday and the crowds came back. They were rewarded with a hugely imaginative, visually audacious show that blurred the lines between fashion and art as it paid tribute to the ingenuity of Black inventors often overlooked by history. And so, there was the peanut butter dress — literally, a huge, soft sculpted jar of the stuff. There was a stunning hot roller cape — which was what it sounds like, hot rollers from head to toe. There was an ice cream cone with chaps for the cone. There was an air-conditioning unit, an old-fashioned mobile phone, a kitchen mop. There was a pastel pink lampshade dress, with beaded fringes. There was a chess board, and a white metal folding chair, and a bottlecap — each costume a sophisticated work of sculpture. There was also a refrigerator with colorful letter magnets spelling out the phrase: "But who invented Black trauma?" There were also dancers, a rap musician, a string section, and a history lesson from Elaine Brown — activist, writer and a former leader in the Black Panther Party. Jean-Raymond, whose shows always entwine his ideas about fashion with those about culture, race and society, said in an interview after the show that his goal was "to highlight inventions by Black people and show them in a nontraditional way," involving 3D construction and sculpture. President Biden nominated Chantale Yokmin Wong to serve as U.S. Director of the Asian Development Bank, ranking as Ambassador, making her the first openly gay woman to hold such a position, reported The Hill. The White House announced last week plans to nominate Wong to serve as U.S. Director of the Asian Development Bank, with the rank of Ambassador. "Wong is also the first LGBTQ person of color to be nominated for an ambassador-level position, according to the LGBTQ Victory Institute," reports The Hill. "Wong was appointed by former President Clinton to serve on the Board of Directors at the Asian Development Bank, where she represented the U.S. as the alternate executive director. Former President Obama later appointed her to serve as vice president for the administration and finance and chief financial officer at the Millennium Challenge Corporation." The White House described Wong as a "leading authority in international development policy with over 30 years of experience in the multi-disciplinary field that includes finance, technology, and the environment." Loudoun County Public Schools district placed elementary gym teacher Byron "Tanner" Cross on leave after he spoke out against the school's preferred pronoun policy and likened the policy to child abuse. "I love all of my students but I will never lie to them regardless of the consequences," he said, in a recorded video of the school board meeting. "I'm a teacher but I serve God first and I will not affirm that a biological boy can be a girl and vice versa because it's against my religion, it's lying to my child, it's abuse to a child and it's sinning against our God." After the district suspended Cross, a judge ordered Loudoun County to reinstate Cross. Now the school district is looking to appeal that decision, NBC News reported. "A spokesman for Loudoun County Public Schools said on Thursday the district is appealing the court's decision to the Virginia Supreme Court, but said he could not comment further on pending litigation," NBC reports. The Alliance Defending Freedom, representing Cross, said in a statement that there is "no reason" for the Virginia Supreme Court to accept the appeal. If there's a missing necklace, an AWOL baby penguin or a herd of on-the-loose caribou, Ridley Jones is your go-to guy. Or make that your girl. The 6-year-old title character of Netflix's new animated series has the pluck and daring of classic screen heroes who were routinely male, a stubborn trope that "Ridley Jones" creator (and out lesbian) Chris Nee is eager to vanquish for TV's youngest viewers. "Girls have not really gotten to be the action-adventure leads of shows" aimed at preschoolers, she said. "It felt really different to give Ridley that journey." Nee counts herself a "huge" fan of 1970s and '80s thrill-ride movies including "Goonies," "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" — with the latter getting a tip of the fedora from Ridley's own headgear in the six-episode series debuting July 13. An award-winning maker of children's animated fare, Nee's consistent goal is to include an array of characters. She did it with "Doc McStuffins," about an African American girl whose career dreams inspired its viewers, especially Black youngsters, to see medicine as an option, and she does it with "Ridley Jones." An equally nuanced approach goes for a friendly, hairdo-conscious bison named Fred, voiced by Ezra Menas. In the first episode, Ridley asks Peaches the monkey if Fred is "a she or a he." A Brazilian politician running for the presidency announced he is gay, challenging the nation's proudly homophobic leader, Jair Bolsonaro. Eduardo Leite, the 36-year-old governor of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, made the announcement last week during an interview with the country's top broadcaster, TV Globo, reports The Guardian. "I have never spoken about a subject related to my private life," the 36-year-old center-right politician said, according to the New York Daily News. "I'm gay — and I'm a governor who is gay rather than a gay governor. Just as Obama in the United States wasn't a black president, but a president who was black. And I'm proud of this," said Leite, from the centre-right Brazilian Social Democratic party (PSDB). "The politician, who hopes to challenge the far-right leader, Jair Bolsonaro, in next year's presidential election, said he had nothing to hide, but wished sexual orientation was 'a non-issue' in Brazil," adds The Guardian. "Leite, who hopes to become his party's nominee to challenge current president — and notorious anti-LGBTQ politician — Jair Bolsonaro in 2022, was an early supporter of the controversial leader," adds the Daily News. The Marvel-inspired Disney+ series "Loki" made headlines last month when it was revealed its titular character, played by Tom Hiddleston, is both gender fluid and bisexual. But now fans are accusing the studio of queerbaiting after the show's director revealed Loki's sexuality won't be explored any further in the series, reports British tabloid Metro. At the time when Loki came out as bi in a conversation with another character in the third episode of the show, director Kate Herron took to Twitter to celebrate the character's identity. But in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Herron was asked if the show will continue to look at "what it means for Loki to be bisexual." "I'm trying to think how to answer your question," she said. "I would say in our story, this is how we acknowledge it. But I hope that that paves the way for deeper exploration." Herron also said she wanted to make sure "we were just wedging something in" when Loki came out as bi. "This episode is really beautiful for me, because it's these two characters getting to know each other, so in that sense, it felt like the right place for that conversation to happen.
