Imagine doing the same work but receiving different remuneration just because we are women - seems unfair, right? Well, gender pay disparity is a glaring and very real issue that showcases the biases within workplaces. Even though we have been talking about this serious concern for a long time, with the current scenario in consideration, we still have a long way to go - whether men agree or not. Now in its 31st year of production, the calendar that a press release calls "the most popular calendar in the world" is back and ready to adorn your walls, all in the name of giving back. Recently, we saw videos from Dhirubhai Ambani International School’s annual day function go viral as so many celeb kids were seen either participating in a play or dancing and performing in some way or the other. And it really made us wonder, ‘Do all desi annual day functions look the same?’ Because, tell us you didn’t look at the make-up the kids were wearing at DAIS and think back to your own school days? I adore winters, and no, the reason is not because I hate extreme heat or love wearing hoodies. The only reason I love this chilly season is because it reminds me of my childhood. From sitting with my grandma on a khaat and eating gajak with her to getting all winter clothes from the trunks and keeping them under the sun like some street market, I miss my childhood each time winter comes. The Warwick Rowers are now Barefoot Man. Established in 2009, the mental health project was started by queer activist Angus Malcolm. Its goal was to a create a series of naked calendars featuring straight sportsmen as a direct challenge to homophobia in sporting culture. Initially, profits from sales went toward funding the rowing club at Warwick University. In 2019, Warwick Rowers internationally rebranded as Worldwide Roar. Now they are rebranding again, reads their website, to the name Barefoot Man. "Barefoot Man enables everyone who identifies as male to confront the rules they were taught as children, to take a more critical look at the culture in which they live and explore how they can make a difference in their everyday lives as men," reads their mission. "Our innovative tools will support men to create a healthier relationship with masculinity – and help the rest of us to look at men as potential allies." Male nudity brought the organization attention from around the world. But now they are once again evolving, according to their new mission. "Our message gradually evolved as we explored the role of men in wider issues of misogyny and inequality. We began to recognize that this was not just a problem for people who had been excluded from power," they shared. "We saw the impact of outdated thinking on male mental health." According to them, Barefoot Man is a name that "reflects another step change in our goals." "The concept of the carbon footprint has been a popular way to understand our personal responsibility towards the planet for over twenty years," they explained. There is no such thing as a healthy family dynamic, in my opinion. Most families are dysfunctional and the only bonding we have is of generational damage. In fact, constant disagreements or just plain annoyance is normal behavior. If anything, that’s a ‘sign of love’. No? I came across a tweet today which talked about ‘psychological damage’ in families – and how it comes across as cordial behaviour. Of course, I cannot help but think that happy familial setups are just creepy, and somewhat eerie. I wouldn’t go as far as to relate them with horror films… but you get the point? A coffee shop in the River North neighborhood delivers the warmth and substantiality of Kazakh culture as soon as the doors open. Enter Tary Coffee House and you’ll see elegant dishware, like wooden bowls and trays, and cozy rugs, all from Kazakhstan, as well as a special green cabinet that was used for generations as a refrigerator but now is symbolic decor. Tary Coffee House brings not only some of the sights but also the traditional smells of Kazakhstan with a selection of coffee, tea, baked goods, filling meals and more. Menstruation is ‘natural’, but I hate it when people use this as an excuse to negate the fact that it’s also extremely painful. I’m 28 and still figuring out how to navigate through adulthood. I still miss my childhood comforts because no one told me that life was gonna be this way. Yes, women have been dicktated enough, but asking for leaves for something as natural as periods? Now, that’s going too far. The prolonged debate on whether or not menstruating women deserve paid period leaves has grown tiresome really. Especially when the answer is straight and simple and lurks in plain sight. Just in case somebody still needs a reality check, the answer is no. Women do not need period leaves. They do not need any special treatment during their menses. And, to be honest, they should have grown accustomed to their monthly biological cycle by now instead of relentlessly cribbing about something that — again — happens (or at least, should happen) to you every month. So because, today, we are too free and desperately yearn for this unimportant conversation to end, we’ve decided 'tis the fateful day we pen down our unsolicited rage-baity meaningful hot-take. Ahh, too many big words! First and foremost, let's put things into real perspective here. It's just periods and not a handicap. I mean, c'mon women, periods are integral to your existence. Your body is supposed to bleed every month for around 40 years of your lifetime so that you get to experience the blessing that childbirth is. AcCePt It AnD mOVe On.
