The parents of a transgender teenager in Texas said in a lawsuit filed Tuesday that the state is investigating them after Republican Gov. Greg Abbott ordered officials to look into reports of gender-confirming care for kids as abuse. The parents of the 16-year-old girl are asking a judge to block the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services from investigating them and the parents of other transgender youth under a directive Abbott issued last month. "Their actions caused terror and anxiety among transgender youth and their families across the Lone Star State and singled out transgender youth and their families," the lawsuit, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal, said. The lawsuit marks the first report of parents being investigated following Abbott's order and an earlier non-binding legal opinion by Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton labeling certain gender-confirming treatments as "child abuse." DFPS, which last week said it did not have any open cases, said Tuesday it had received three reports since Abbott's directive and Paxton's opinion but would not say how many resulted in investigations. Equality advocates in Singapore expressed disappointment with the country's highest court refusing to overturn a law criminalizing gay sex on the grounds that the law is never enforced. The advocates say the real problem isn't the colonial-era law itself, which is know as Section 377A, but the discrimination it implicitly endorses. The New York Times noted, "A similar law imposed by British colonial rulers in India — and known there as 377 — was struck down by the Indian Supreme Court in 2018, inspiring activists to challenge the law in Singapore and other former British colonies." But the Singapore Court of Appeals turned the case aside with an argument that "that three men who brought challenges did not have legal standing because the government has pledged not to enforce the colonial-era law," the Times detailed. LGBTQ+ advocacy organization Pink Dot SG said in a statement that the court's reasoning was "cold comfort," UK newspaper the Independent reported. This week saw the Paramount+ release of the coming-of-age film "Three Months" starring out pop superstar Troye Sivan. In the film he plays "a Florida teen named Caleb who ponders life in 2011 — and the possibilities of love — after he hooks up with someone who has HIV," the New York Post said. "Caleb must then endure a grueling three-month wait to find out whether he himself has tested positive." "I can relate to a lot of Caleb," said Sivan, who, like his character, is both gay and Jewish. "There's a lot of experience that I think he goes through that I can really, really sympathize and empathize with." Despite its anxiety-ridden subject matter, Variety had this to say about the film: "Writer-director Jared Frieder's feature debut feels like the LGBT equivalent of 'Juno': snappy and refreshingly nonjudgmental in dealing with the consequences of a risky one-night stand." But, Sivan told IndieWire that the film nearly didn't get made. Out Italian singer Mahmood is heading to the European Song Contest for a second time after winning the Italian leg of the competition. He's also doing so with a partner — singer and up-and-coming pop star Blanco, Wanted in Rome reported. Mahmood dueted with Blanco at the 72nd Sanremo Music Festival. Now, they will go on to represent Italy in this year's Eurovision Song Contest which takes place in Turin on May 14. He had previously finished second in 2019 representing Italy. "The winning act clinched victory with their song 'Brividi' in the final round of voting from the Sanremo juries and the public," Wanted in Rome said. "Mahmood & Blanco had been hotly tipped as favourites to win Sanremo and when the winning result was announced the younger singer ran off the stage to hug his mother." The duo's song "Brividi" (translates as "Shivers") was unusual in that it is a passionate ballad sung between two men. "'Brividi' has an important message, that of freedom, which is a universal theme. Duncan James is one of the best-known out personalities in the media today; but it hasn't always been this way. In a conversation with Rylan Clark on Clark's podcast "Ry-Union," the musician opened up about the difficulties he faced in addressing his sexuality publicly, the Independent reports. "I think being in such a public boy band, with the majority of fans being female, it was really hard for me to actually have the courage to come out," he said, "because I was scared on so many different levels on so many different things." And it wasn't as if he was sure. "And, to be honest, I didn't quite understand too much about my own sexuality at that time, I was just really confused." James was the lead singer of Blue, the British boy band that released three albums and 16 singles from 2000 through 2005. At that time the group went into hiatus as its members chose to pursue solo careers. But in 2011 they reunited as the British entry in the European Song Contest, coming in 11th place. On his own, James has released solo music, appeared in numerous television shows, and starred on the West End in 'Chicago" and "Legally Blonde." The Vatican and an Italian Catholic bishop this week protested a performance at Italy's Sanremo music festival that featured a "profane" faux baptism on stage, lamenting in particular that it was broadcast on public television. On the opening night of the annual song contest, a tattooed, bare-chested and barefoot singer named Achille Lauro gyrated and grabbed his crotch as he sang "Domenica" ("Sunday"), backed up by singers from the Harlem Gospel Choir. He finished by kneeling on stage, hands clasped in front of him as if in prayer, and poured water from a bowl over his forehead. Sanremo Bishop Antonio Suetta said the performance contained "words, attitudes and gestures that are not just offensive to religion, but to human dignity." $Ronan Gordon claims that he was set upon and beaten by a group of bouncers at Bloom, a gay nightclub in Manchester, England, in an "unprovoked attack" that knocked him out and left him with facial injuries that will require surgery. The National Assembly approved the new law unanimously, voting 142-0 on Tuesday evening. The legislation includes criminal penalties for people who are convicted of trying to "convert" LGBTQ people to heterosexuality or traditional gender expectations. "Mexico have struggled to eradicate certain terrace chants over recent years, particularly one shouted when opposition keepers take a goal kick, leading to them being sanctioned by FIFA," Goal.com detailed. According to Goal.com, the chants have already resulted in a decision to bar all fan attendance from two upcoming matches, though that decision was recently reversed. Mexican national team "El Tri were due to play their next two World Cup qualifiers, at home against Costa Rice and Panama on January 30 and February 2 respectively, behind closed doors due to previous instances of anti-gay chanting," Goal.com said. "Adam," an hourlong play written by Frances Poet, stars Adam Kashmiri and is based on Kashmiri's experiences as a transgender man, first in his native Egypt — where he faces constant misgendering and dangerous anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment — and then as a refugee seeking asylum on Scotland. "Adam" pushes buttons that not even the acclaimed documentary "Flee," also about an LGBTQ+ refugee from an Arabic country, put its finger on. The story is told, adroitly and with emotional force, through a mixture of flashbacks and present-day interactions with a mental health nurse (Stephen McCole) who's come to check on Adam — who, at that point, has been living in isolation for 403 days (a tally that grows to 600 as his struggle continues). Not much about this play is gentle, in fact, but everything about it speaks to the needless pain and terror transgender people are subjected to in repressive places around the world — which, sadly, includes a number of American states. The pay's universality and unflinching honesty give it a harrowing power, but also a deeply affecting poignance that's amplified, and given voice anew, by a choir of 140 transgender and non-binary singers from around the world. A haunting work, "Adam" holds out hope for healing and happiness. It's a story that needs to be told — now more than ever. "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" is headed for the exit, ending this year after 19 seasons. And now, "Ellen's Game of Games" has gotten the axe, Variety reported.⁠ ⁠ The show — which Variety noted "included supersized versions of some of the most popular games from 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show'" — aired on NBC for four seasons, but it won't be back for a fifth.⁠ ⁠ "The series also features Stephen 'tWitch' Boss who, with DeGeneres, oversaw the contestants playing different games over four rounds," Variety said.
