? Právě dnes slaví hip hop 51 let ? 11. 8. 1973 probíhal narozeninový večírek jisté Cindy. Akce se konala v legendárním činžovním domě na adrese 1520 Sedgwick Avenue v newyorském Bronxu. Budova je dodnes považována za místo, kde oficiálně vznikl Hip Hop. Dokonce i ulice, kde se tento večírek (a mnoho dalších) pořádal, byla v roce 2016 přejmenována na Hip Hop Boulevard. Hlavní postavou tohoto příběhu ale není Cindy. Tím nejdůležitějším člověkem je Clive Campbell. Narodil se 16. dubna 1955 ve městě Kingston na Jamajce, odkud se ve věku 12 let odstěhoval právě do amerického Bronxu. Jako středoškolák se věnoval nejprve posilování, a protože byl poměrně vysoký, tak od svých kamarádů obdržel přezdívku Hercules, z čehož vzniklo zkrácené Herc. Tuto přezdívku aplikoval nejdříve při sprejování graffiti a poté i při deejayingu. Začal si říkat Dj Kool Herc. Zásadní pro vývoj hiphopové hudby bylo, když si Dj Kool Herc všiml, že lidé na akcích, kde hrál, při tanci více reagují na pasáže z písní, ve kterých se nezpívá a na chvíli vyčnívá beat (neboli breaks). To ho zaujalo, a proto se rozhodl, že by bylo dobré, kdyby tyto pasáže byly dlouhé stejně jako celá píseň. Lidé by pak zůstávali na parketě déle a více by tancovali. Jako první na světě si tedy pořídil dva gramofony a kupoval si také vždy dvě stejné gramofonové desky, aby mohl instrumentální pasáže z písní mixovat neustále za sebou. Tento postup použil poprvé právě 11. 8. 1973 na akci nazvané Back To School Jam. Právě proto je tento den považován za den, kdy vznikl Hip Hop ?
