Former NFL player Colton Underwood says he avoided showering with teammates because he feared getting "turned on". Instead, he would skip the post-practice wash, TMZ reported. Underwood added that it was a "silly" thing to do, since "I never really was attracted to anybody who I played with, or coaches." Still, it was a fear of being outed that drove him to such extremes. Avoiding dressing and showering with his teammates was part of a larger pattern, Underwood related, saying, "There was just a lot of things that I sort of did differently than other players because I felt like I had to, because I didn't want questions to start being asked." That fear also drove other behaviors. Away from the locker room and his fellow football players, Underwood said, he tried to have sex with men he thought would also be "straight in their real life," Page Six detailed. "I don't think there was any man that was going to be coming out to get me because they would be outing themselves as well," Underwood explained, going on to say, "It wasn't like a ton of men. It was like a few, and they never had my real name". The comments are of a piece with remarks he's made on "Coming Out Colton," Page Six noted. "I was suppressing my sexuality so hard that I was taking medication daily to deal with depression and anxiety, and that made me a paranoid freak," the publication quoted Underwood as saying in the Netflix documentary series. "Being the Ricardos" filmmaker Aaron Sorkin called casting only LGBTQ+ actors in LGBTQ+ roles an "empty gesture" because "Gay and straight aren't actable." Sorkin made the comments while talking about Spanish actor Javier Bardem playing Cuban entertainer Desi Arnaz in Sorkin's new film, "Being the Ricardos," UK newspaper The Times reported. โ โ Crow River Media detailed the 60-year-old filmmaker's comments, reporting that Sorkin offered the opinion that nationality โ such as Bardem being Spanish and Arnaz having been Cuban โ are "not actable" attributes. For the role, Bardem, 52, adjusted his accent to more closely resemble that of Santiago de Cuba-born Arnaz.โ โ "If I was directing you in a scene and said: 'It's cold, you can't feel your face,' that's actable," Sorkin argued. "But if I said, 'Be Cuban,' that is not actable. "Nouns aren't actable," Sorkin continued, before adding: "Gay and straight aren't actable. You can act being attracted to someone, but can't act gay or straight. So this notion that only gay actors should play gay characters? That only a Cuban actor should play Desi? Last month Aussie footballer Josh Cavallo came out in an emotional video he called "Josh's Truth." Sent via social media, Cavallo said, "There's something personal that I need to share with everyone: I'm a footballer, and I am gay."โ โ This week Cavallo opened up about why he chose October 27 to come out, and the out ex-football star who inspired him to make the move in an interview with the Aussie newspaper The Herald Sun. "Cavallo wears the number 27 for the Adelaide Reds, and the 27th is his parents' wedding anniversary," the Daily Mail said. "Cavallo's treasured grandfather also died on the 27th a few years ago, making it a special number for the family."โ โ He added that it was a conversation with ex-football star, Britisher Thomas Beattie, that helped him be confident enough to come out.
