Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar famously turned down directing a movie about gay cowboys in Wyoming. "Brokeback Mountain" has since become a gay classic, but now, the out director says he is set to send his own gay cowboy romance, "Strange Way of Life," to Cannes for its much-anticipated premiere next May. "The director broke the news on Dua Lipa's 'At Your Service' podcast," according to Variety. Almodóvar opened up a little about the movie, telling Variety, "It's about masculinity in a deep sense, because the Western is a male genre." The "Pain and Glory" director went on to say that the short film, which will have a run time of half an hour, "has a lot of the elements of the Western — it has the gunslinger, it has the ranch, it has the sheriff — but what it has that most Westerns don't have is the kind of dialogue that I don't think a Western film has ever captured between two men." Almodóvar teased that the movie is a "queer Western, in the sense that there are two men and they love each other," but, he said, the two cowboys in the film — played by Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal — "behave in that situation in an opposite way." Exactly what the "Parallel Mothers" director meant by that remains unclear; Almodóvar reigned himself in, saying, "And now I think I'm telling you a little bit too much." "Strange Way of Life" also stars 23-year-old Spanish actor Manu Ríos, who, as previously reported, has already found a measure of fame for his role in the Netflix series "Elite." Exactly how his character figures into the story remains to be discovered. Tap link in bio for more on @EDGEmedianetwork ???? ?: Manu Rios
