At 78, Chicago business owner Marvin Barsky is at the peak of his career. It wasn’t his heyday as a NASCAR speedway baron, or his gilded age as a shared office space tycoon. In January, he cinched the opportunity to become the first new owner of The Bagel Restaurant and Deli in 54 years. “I was nervous, to be very honest. At my age, I gotta be nuts to do it,” said Barsky, who is avoiding retirement to run the schmaltzy deli he frequented as a child. “But this type of food is a tradition to me. I feel a responsibility to keep it going.” The Lakeview landmark’s late owner Danny Wolf died in July 2022 at 77, leaving a legacy more enduring than just about any other Chicago deli.
