Lin-Manuel Miranda directs the film adaptation of Jonathan Larson's play "tick, tick... BOOM!," bringing an authenticity to the experience of creating a musical โ the fear, the frustration, and the overriding optimism that Miranda (the force behind "Hamilton" and co-creator of "In the Heights") must know well.โ โ "tick, tick... BOOM!" tells the story of Larson's struggle to put together a presentation of a science fiction musical he calls "Superbia." Set in a toxic future, it's about how people spend all their time fixed on their "media delivery devices," and patterning their lives after TV programs. (All in all, Larson more or less hit the nail on the head.) The problem is that no one understands what he's going for, and no one thinks the show is going to succeed. Larson (played by British actor Andrew Garfield) swims recreationally, for exercise and to clear his head, but he's swimming upstream when it comes to getting anyone to pay attention to his idea. โ โ The movie is well written (by Steven Levenson, based on Larson's play) and competently directed by Miranda, who displays some impressive visual inventiveness. It also often feels, however, like the reverse side of a tapestry or, in more mundane terms, a sort of "Behind the Music" look at Larson's pre-"RENT" life and struggles. The songs underscore the impression; they are uniformly energetic, and there are a couple of gorgeous numbers that break the mold, but most of the setlist feels prototypical of, and cut from the same cloth, as the songs from Larson's bigger, better-known work.โ โ If you're still high on Jon M. Out country music star T.J. Osborne made history when he sealed his Country Music Award win with a same-sex kiss โ a celebratory snog that was seen on the air, Buzzfeed reported.โ โ Osborne and his brother, John, won the Vocal Duo of the Year Award at the CMA ceremony, which was broadcast on ABC Nov. 10. A Republican lawmaker has, according to him, solved the world's problems, and it all comes down to same-sex marriage.โ โ During a televised debate about new anti-domestic violence legislation, Rep. Bob Good of Virginia launched into a tirade about how marriage equality was part of a "plague" affecting society, reported the Independent.โ โ "Nearly everything that plagues our society can be attributed to a failure to follow God's law and his rules for and definition of marriage and family," Good stated. According to him, the anti-domestic violence bill's gender identity provisions would "coerce faith-based providers... to violate their deeply held beliefs or stop their work altogether".โ โ The moment was captured via C-Span and sparked internet-wide outrage, with many branding Good a "bigot." To his credit, Good seems to be an equal opportunity offender. A Navy ship named for slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk, who served four years in the Navy before being forced out, was christened and launched in San Diego Bay on Saturday.โ โ The replenishment oiler USNS Harvey Milk slid down the shipyard ways after a bottle of champagne was smashed on the bow by former Navy officer Paula M.
